The current situation in Sekou, Benin
Benin is one of the poorest countries in the world. Around more than a third of the Benin population live below the poverty line. The countryside village Sekou is situated in the south of Benin, where the majority of Benin’s 11,485,000 inhabitants live. From Sekou to Cotonou, the country’s largest city and economic capital, it takes some hours driving by car. People of Sekou are poor, without perspectives and hope to create a better life. Most of the inhabitants don’t have a job or the possibility to earn money. The village is too far from the city Cotonou, to get there. And in the village there is a lack of education and knowledge to help them selfs.
The goal of this project is to provide specific eduction for the local needs and to help people of Sekou in finding business opportunities and to create their own business.
How we will do this
As first step a restaurant will be opened in Cotonou, the big city some hours driving from Sekou. With the opening of a restaurant called “Royaume des délices” in Cotonou, jobs are to be created for Sekou. The restaurant will have two sectors, a normal restaurant sector and an upper class sector with white tablecloths. The menu consists of local dishes as well as African dishes from the surrounding countries.
As second step, the proceeds from the restaurant will be used for the further development of the village as well as for the education and training of the villagers of Sekou in the sense of helping people to help themselves. With micro credits the enterpreneural projects will be supported and coached up to success.
Why we are engage ourself
This project was initiated in and will be driven from Switzerland with highly qualified volunteers. With the direct connection to and cooperation with our local project leader, we can guarantee, that every coin/euro will be invested efficiently and effective in favor of the people of Sekou.
With a quarterly reporting to our investors, we will give an insight to progress, results and financial expenses.
Short Overview
Project owner: Project owner is the nonprofit Swiss Charity Association «Hilfe zur Selbsthilfe in Benin» (Help for self help in Benin). The member of this charity organisation act without remuneration. This guarantees, that the donations can be fully used for the goal of the project. Every project step and the use of money are contolled by the Swiss Charity Association.
For enhancing donors trust, the Society is preparing the certification with the Swiss ZEWO-seal. (Charities with the Zewo-seal offer true and fair financial reporting, provide transparent information and have appropriate controls. They are honest and procure their funds in a fair manner.)

Project leader: Audon Vermeil is a young initiative and well educated restaurant manager and cook. He has grown up in the village Sekou. With the coaching of the Swiss Charity Association he prepared a sophisticated business plan and evaluated possible locations for the restaurant. He is the local manager and coordinator.
With your support of 500.000 Euro we will build a superior restaurant in Cotonou close to the sea. This restaurant will be runned by people of the poor village Sekou. The profit will be used for economic empowerment of the inhabitants of Sekou.
The goal of the project beside the restaurant is to help people of Sekou in finding business opportunities and to create their own business.
